LUCERNA ROMANO-REPUBLICANA DE CHIBANES

Lucerna de tradição helenística (tipo G de Ricci/ Dressel 1B), com ampla cronologia (130-30 a.C) e distribuição. Foi encontrada em Chibanes em um contexto habitacional de c. 70-50 a.C. durante as escavações arqueológicas aí realizadas pelo MAEDS.  

Trata-se de um artefacto indispensável à vida quotidiana, bem adaptado à tradicional iluminação a azeite mediterrânea. Se no ambiente doméstico fazia recuar as sombras, também na morte iluminaria o caminho oculto da grande viagem, integrando pois deposições funerárias. 

Embora fabricadas em série, as lucernas romano-republicanas possuem em geral pasta bem depurada, e motivos decorativos geométricos no disco que realçam a elegância da forma, como se pode ver no exemplar de Chibanes, onde ainda se conservam vestígios do verniz negro que revestia as superfícies externas da peça.

ROMAN-REPUBLICAN LAMP FROM CHIBANES

Hellenistic tradition lamp (Ricci type G/ Dressel 1B), with wide diachrony (130-30 BC) and circulation. This lamp was found in a residential environment dated between c. 70-50 BC during the archaeological excavations held by this Museum (MAEDS) at Chibanes (Palmela).

It is a crucial artefact for everyday life, well adapted to traditional Mediterranean olive oil lighting. If in the domestic environment it made the shadows recede, in the afterlife it would enlight the hidden path of the great journey, and doing so is often found in funerary depositions.

Although manufactured on a large scale base, the Roman-Republican lamps generally have a well-purified clay and geometric decorative motifs on the disc that enhance the elegance of the shape, as can be seen in the Chibanes example, where traces of the original black gloss still cover the external surfaces of the lamp.
