Estela epigrafada
I Idade do Ferro - Cerca do Curralão. Descoberta em 1979, a
estela funerária procedente da Cerca do Curralão em Almodôvar, apresenta texto
dextrorso embora disposto em boustrophedon, onde se reconhecem dezassete letras
completas e oito incompletas, constituindo fórmula funerária, possivelmente
formada por seis palavras. Estas corresponderão a nome próprio, etnónimo menor,
patronímico, cognome ou gamonímico e a etnónimo maior, usado como origónomo.
Aquele último presente em 60% das estelas funerárias da I Idade
do Ferro do Sudoeste Peninsular, indica povo, com origem minorasiática,
mencionado por diversos autores da Antiguidade como habitando territórios do
hoje Baixo Alentejo e Algarve.
O estudo das epígrafes referidas, permite concluir que a
escrita dita do Sudoeste Peninsular é alfabética e expressa língua
indo-europeia, que usou sete vogais e apresenta bom número de características
fonéticas e gráficas, permitindo integrá-la na grande família das escritas e
das línguas gregas arcaicas, com maior diversidade na Ásia Menor.

The funerary stele from Cerca do Curralão in Almodôvar,
discovered in 1979, displays dextrorse text although it is written
boustrophedon. Seventeen fully formed letters and eight partly formed letters
can be recognised.
They constitute a funerary formula, possibly made up of six
words which would correspond to the name, minor ethnonym, patronym, cognomen or
gamonymic and the major ethnonym, used as the native name.
The latter is present in 60% of the funerary stelae dating
from the first Iron Age in the Peninsular Southwest. It indicates a people of
Asia Minor origin who are mentioned by several authors from Antiquity as
inhabiting the territories of what is today the Baixo Alentejo and Algarve.
The study of these epigraphs allows us to conclude that the
writing termed Peninsula Southwestern is alphabetic, expresses an Indo-
European language and used seven vowels. It displays a good number of phonetic
and graphic characteristics, thereby allowing us to integrate it within the
large family of archaic Greek writing systems and languages with the greatest
diversity being found in Asia Minor.
